Jade Purple Brown & Vaughn Fender

Let’s face it. June of 2020 was a long year. While it’s quieted down a bit, I’m still thinking a lot about how to be actively anti-racist as a one-person design shop in one of the least diverse places in the country.

I haven’t figured it out yet, but when I was drooling over the work of a designer I love recently (who happens to be black), it occurred to me that perhaps one small step I can take is to share her work with my audience (small though it may be). I started doing some research on other black designers, and chose these two to share with you this month. This is, of course, the least I can do, but it’s a start.

Jade Purple Brown

I really don’t know how else to say this: Jade Purple Brown kicks butt and takes names. Her work is bright, bold, and energizing. Her women are beyond brilliant. You can’t ignore them, and they make me want to stand up and be noticed, too.

If you’re not in a position to hire her for your next design project (she’s worked for some of the most high-profile clients out there), you CAN buy one of her amazing prints or her book of quotes for women. Really, any respectable, color- and quote-loving woman should have a copy on her shelf!

Vaughn Fender

Vaughn Fender, who also has a VERY cool name, is an Art Director & illustrator. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, his work is full of vibrant color, bustling shapes and humor. He spends his time drawing, collaging, creating crazy letters, and infusing his work with playful, hand-drawn illustrations and letterforms. I don’t consider myself an artist, so work that reflects this level of artistry is pretty drool-worthy from my point of view.

He’s also got a book you can buy. He describes it as a “whimsical, colorful, fun tale about perfect pairs.”
